Description
Diestelhorst Bridge and the Lake Redding Bridge in Redding California. Side By Side, old and new.
The Diestelhorst Bridge on the right. Some local residents whimsically call it the Diesel Horse Bridge is an arched, reinforced-concrete bridge that was built in 1914-15. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Diestelhorst Bridge, a pedestrian and bicycle path across the Sacramento River in Redding. It was named for Gotlieb Diestelhorst, whose family owned the land where it was built.
The bridge has the distinction of being the first bridge for automobiles and the first reinforced-concrete bridge built across the Sacramento River.
Upon completion of the Lake Redding Bridge (on the left) in 1997, the Diestelhorst Bridge was removed from highway service and converted to pedestrian use. Project scope of work included structural condition evaluation and rehabilitation design of the existing historical structure.
